'Operation Hands Free' is launched

by isleofman.com 5th July 2011

The dangers of using mobile phones while driving are being highlighted in a new safety campaign.

Last year, 37 road accidents in the Isle of Man were caused by drivers being distracted behind the wheel, and the police and the Department of Infrastructure are using that statistic to promote 'Operation Hands Free'.

Minister fror Infrastructure Phil Gawne is reminding motorists it is an offence to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving, whether making a call or texting. He says drivers should pull over in a safe place if they need to use their phone for any reason.

The advice to motorists is to divert their calls to voice mail while behind the wheel and, failing that, use a Bluetooth hands-free device.

The maximum penalty for using a mobile phone while driving is a fine of ?1,000.
