Scouts to represent the Isle of Man at Swedish jamboree

by isleofman.com 30th June 2011

A GROUP of 10 scouts will represent the Isle of Man at the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden.

Around 38,000 scouts from all over the world will attend the jamboree which takes place every four years. This year's event will run from July 27 to August 8.

The Isle of Man scouts, who range from 14 to 17 years old, were selected to represent the Isle of Man after a day long selection process 18 months ago. Those chosen had to work together to raise the £20,000 needed to fund the trip.

Roger Birtles, scout leader for 1st Malew, is accompanying the scouts on the trip. He said: "This is a life changing event. There are so many different nationalities and cultures all coming together and living together peacefully. It is like having the world on your doorstep. We will all make many new life long friends.

"The boys have all been given smart new kits including boots, trousers and shirts with the Manx logo embroidered on them and a Manx tartan neckerchief. We are very fortunate that individuals and organisations have supported us so generously."

Simcocks Advocates provided the scouts with new boots for the trip. Director Irini Newby said: "This is a landmark event for those taking part and we are delighted to help such a talented group of people fulfill their ambitions. It is part of Simcocks ongoing commitment to support the local community and we know they will make excellent ambassadors for the Isle of Man."

The scouts will leave the Island on July 24 and spend three days in Copenhagen before taking special trains to the camp in Sweden. After the week long jamboree the group will travel to Zurich to stay with the families of other scouts.
