AG unsuccessful in bid for more draconian sentence

by isleofman.com 30th June 2011

An Island lawyer found guilty of money laundering has failed in a move to overturn her conviction.

However, a bid by the Attorney General to have a more draconian sentence imposed has also failed.

Jenny Holt, 30, of Union Mills received a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years, in February after being found guilty by a jury of handling ?400,000 stolen from a trust fund by tycoon Trevor Baines and his wife Wendy.

At the time, the Attorney General had pushed for immediate custody and subsequently asked for a review of what it classed as an ‘unduly lenient’ sentence.

Then AG John Corlett said he was mindful of the ‘importance of the reputation of the island in the eyes of the International Monetary Fund’.

However, its bid for the sentence to be reviewed has also been dismissed at Douglas courthouse.
