MOTORISTS have been asked to play their part in making sure the Parish Walk runs smoothly this year.
On Saturday more than 1,700 people are expected to take to the Island's roads to compete in the endurance event.
Inspector Mark Britton, from the Roads Policing Unit, said: "The Isle of Man Parish Walk will again hit the roads and pavements of the Isle of Man this weekend.
"The route starts at the National Sports Centre at 8am on Saturday. Motorists are advised to find alternative routes and avoid the areas within the early miles of the walk.
"The road between the Strang and Crosby Cross Roads will be closed between 8.20am and 9.30am again this year to maximise the safety of walkers.
"As the event extends into the dark hours of night motorists are reminded that they can expect to see pedestrians on the road in areas where they may not normally see pedestrians at that time. Please take care particularly in the north and east of the Island.
"The Isle of Man Constabulary works closely with the organisers and the marshals of this event to promote safety. Walkers taking part have guidelines on their safety as do their support vehicles.
"Please take your part in making the event safe again this year and drive carefully around the roads on the course there may be walkers and support vehicles in the area.
"Officers from the Isle of Man Special Constabulary work hard to manage the smooth running of the event and I pay personal tribute and thanks to them for their work in this event. Officers from the Roads Policing Unit on motorcycles will support the special constabulary and marshals for the event.
"This is a growing event with a proud tradition and the constabulary is proud to play a part in it. Somewhere in the region of 1,750 people are expected to take part this year. I wish them the best of luck and hope that the planning for the event makes it a safe one."
