'Essential' sewerage work backed by Tynwald

by isleofman.com 22nd June 2011

Ten of the Isle of Man's sewage pumping stations are to be refurbished, at a total cost of just over ?500,000.

Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Authority Tim Crookall MHK told Tynwald it was essential to continually invest in the stations, to make sure they worked properly and to avoid sewage flooding.

He said no Manx company was in a position to tender for the work, but assured members much of it would be sub-contracted to local firms, with Eric Wright Civil Engineering, which carried out the first phase of improvements, overseeing the project.

He said phase one was completed on time and within budget.

Onchan MHK Peter Karran voted against the motion, saying equipment shouldn't just be replaced because it had reached a certain age.

The project is due to start in July and should be completed before the end of the year.
