'Surprise' opposition to pitches scheme

Leisure Minister David Cretney has admitted he was surprised there was opposition to a move to spend ?640,000 to replace synthetic games pitches around the Island.

Tynwald approved the move yesterday (Tuesday), but not before Onchan MHK Peter Karran had questioned if it was the right time for the scheme to be undertaken.

Mr Karran attempted to amend the motion, but was unsuccessful.

Mr Cretney said he had expected the scheme to go through 'on the nod', but while many other members were highly critical of Mr Karran's move, he understood his reasons:
