MHK takes cancer drug plea to Tynwald

by isleofman.com 20th June 2011

A Douglas man diagnosed with pancreatic cancer has described his despair after the Island's health service turned down his plea to fund treatment with a new drug.

David Cowin from Glen Park has been told by specialists in the United Kingdom that the drug Sunitinib could prolong his life, possibly by years.

It is available on prescription in Scotland, but hasn't yet been approved in England.

Mr Cowin admits it's a costly drug but says he would give up his state benefits if Manx health chiefs allowed him a prescription.

He is convinced he should be given a chance to see if it would help (first part of audio file):

Mr Cowin's MHK North Douglas member Bill Henderson will raise the case in Tynwald tomorrow (Tuesday).

Health chiefs say if they fund the drug Mr Cowin wants, other patients could demand a range of expensive drugs the health service can't afford.

But Mr Henderson rejects the idea Mr Cowin's case could set a precedent (second part of audio file):
