A FORMER derelict building in Peel is set to become a new focal point for wildlife and nature conservation in the Isle of Man.
This Saturday the Manx Wildlife Trust will move into a new shop in Market Place following a cash injection of more than £45,000.
The site has been transformed in partnership between the Peel Regeneration Committee and the Department of Infrastructure. A grant of £30,275 was received from the Isle of Man Town and Village Regeneration Scheme and £16,030 was received from the Historic Building Conservation Scheme.
The building will act as the new headquarters, shop and information centre for the Manx Wildlife Trust.
Director Duncan Bridges said: "This has been a major project for our charity and the financial support we received through the Regeneration Scheme and Historic Building Conservation Scheme, along with the many other donors and sponsors, has been a key part in the final success of the whole programme of works."
Tim Crookall MHK, the chairman of the Peel Regeneration Committee, said: "This is an important step forward in terms of breathing fresh life into the town and shows what can be achieved when different organisations work together. I'm delighted to see the Manx Wildlife Trust move into Peel and wish them every success for the future."
Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK said: "This regeneration project has given a new lease of life to a prominent and historic building and I hope it will be well received by the general public. The support provided through the Historic Building Conservation Scheme has helped to preserve the architectural heritage of the building."
Other regeneration proposals in Peel will focus on linking the quayside and promenade with Michael Street and improving Market Place in order to maximise the potential of the town’s commercial areas.
£8 million has been earmarked for the Isle of Man Town and Village Regeneration Scheme and progress is currently being made on a number of regional proposals.
Regeneration manager Linda McCauley said: "The Isle of Man Government is working in partnership with commissioners, the business community and voluntary sector to support improvements to our towns and villages. The revitalisation of these areas will have spin-offs which help local economies.
"We have several projects, large and small, at various stages of completion, and other applications in the pipeline.
"The Manx Wildlife Trust shop is another positive example of how local people are getting involved to directly influence what happens in their communities."
