Local heroes will carry torch next June

by isleofman.com 10th June 2011

Members of the public in the Isle of Man are being offered the chance to nominate people to carry the Olympic Torch next year.

A prototype of the torch which will be used for the United Kingdom-wide relay next year will be coming to the Island on June 17.

The 'Olympic Torch Tour' will be at Regent Street in Douglas from 10am to 5pm next Friday.

Local residents can have their photograph taken with prototype, learn about the history of the relay and play interactive games.

There will be a short opening ceremony at 10am, hosted by the national presenting partner for the relay, Lloyds TSB.

Nominations will also be taken for people who have made a real difference in their local community to carry the flame in the official relay, which gets under way at Land's End on May 18 next year.

Youth Cycling League organiser Dot Tilbury says there are many inspirational stories to come out of the Island and it's the perfect opportunity to honour those whose efforts make a real difference.

She is encouraging people to go along and make their nominations and is looking forward to seeing the Island's heroes proudly bearing the torch next June.

Online nominations can be made at lloydstsb.com/carrytheflame until September 12, and selected torch-bearers will be announced on December 11.
