UNEMPLOYMENT in the Isle of Man has fallen to the lowest figure so far this year.

Statistics show that unemployment in May fell by 37 to 806 - an unemployment rate of 1.9 per cent.

During May 178 people signed on but 215 signed off. Of the total number of people unemployed 583 are male and 223 are female.

A total of 610 vacancies were notified to the Job Centre during the month and at the end of the month 312 positions were still vacant and held on file.

Treasury Minister Anne Craine MHK said: "I am encouraged to see that unemployment has fallen by 85 over the last two months taking the rate to below two per cent for the first time during 2011.

"We are continuing to see about a quarter of those registered unemployed at the start of a month are finding employment by the end of the month. Also we are not seeing any increase in the number of people unemployed for more than a year."
