Arts Centre looking for 'Stompers'

by isleofman.com 2nd June 2011

A GROUP is being formed which will emulate the style of world famous Brighton troupe Stomp.

The Isle of Man Youth Arts Centre is behind the initiative which will see the group use household and industrial items such as dustpans, rusty metal signs, ladders and oil drums to make music.

Leader Alex Turner said: "After seeing similar groups in the UK I was captivated by their energy and performance levels and have been working on creating rhythms using everything from the human body to oil drums, shopping trolleys, dustbin lids and various other hittable stomping objects which make a very good noise."

The sessions will start on Thursday, June 16 at 7.30pm at the Youth Arts Centre at Kensington Road, Douglas, and are for people aged 14 and over.

There is a cost of £1 per session and they last 90 minutes.

Head of Youth Arts at the YAC Fiona Helleur said: "We are very excited about this project and delighted that Alex is joining us to present this highly energetic and fun performance art.

"I hesitate to call it dance or theatre, even calling it music is questionable, but it is incredible to watch and even more fun to do and we are looking forward to old rubbish being brought into the centre to create a startling piece of theatre that will bring an exciting and original performance art to the Island."
