Breast care plan is 'a calculated insult'

by isleofman.com 27th May 2011

Chair of the Isle of Man Joint Women's Council Penny Creighton says it's right for Tynwald to debate proposed changes to the Island's breast care service.

The Department of Health is planning to appoint a general surgeon with an interest in breast care to replace a dedicated surgeon who is currently employed on a locum basis.

It's caused a great deal of concern and led to the formation of a Breast Cancer Action Group, which is urging the department to keep things as they are.

The group is supported by East Douglas MHK Brenda Cannell, who is taking the matter to Tynwald next month.

The YWC represents around 6,000 women on the Island and at its latest quarterly meeting members voted to send a letter outlining their concerns to Health Minister David Anderson.

The organisation is describing the plan as "a calculated insult to the women of the Isle of Man".

Mrs Creighton says, with emotions running so high, the issue needs to be debated in public:
