OVER the last five years 25 vehicles have been involved in incidents on Manx roads where fuel on the road has been a contributory factor.
In order to reduce these figures the Department of Infrastructure is joining forces with the Isle of Man Constabulary to run a new awareness campaign.
Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne said: "Fuel Spills cause an unacceptable hazard to motorists and motorcycles and threaten the safety of all road users.
"The message is clear - take care when fuelling your vehicle to avoid spills and leaks.
"If your vehicle leaks fuel you can be prosecuted and may be fined up to £1,000 for private vehicle drivers and £2,500 for commercial vehicles.
"Regardless of the financial costs riding over a diesel spill is every motorcyclist's nightmare.
"There is also the inconvenience while my department clears up the spill which leads to delays and frustration."
It is believed that the majority of fuel spills are caused by commercial vehicles due to the location of their fuel tanks.
The Road Safety Team of the Department of Infrastructure has written to commercial vehicle operators across the Island advising them of the consequences of spilling fuel.
The letter will also contain four self adhesive tank stickers to remind drivers and members of the maintenance team not to overfill the tank and to fit the cap correctly.
The Road Safety Team will also be visiting the Island's filling stations to enhance public awareness of this issue.
Inspector Mark Britton, head of the Island's road policing unit, said: "I would appeal to the public to take the following steps. We need your help to make this problem go away."
- If you run a diesel vehicle don't overfill your tank and remember to replace your fuel cap properly – it's money down the drain if you don't.
- Ensure your vehicle is well serviced. If you see a problem get it fixed immediately before it causes problems to others.
- Early reporting is essential. The earlier they are reported the sooner they can be dealt with.
- If you are responsible for diesel vehicles in your work place then you should take steps to ensure that diesel from your vehicle does not find its way on to the road.
