'Lethal drug should have been banned'

by isleofman.com 26th May 2011

An MHK is asking why a change in the law designed to combat the menace of so-called 'legal highs' was not used to outlaw a drug which killed a Ramsey teenager.

An inquest into the death of 17-year-old Tanya Hughes heard she died from an overdose of the chemically-produced MDAI, which is available on the internet.

Tanya passed away on her way to hospital after she collapsed in a house in Ramsey on April 15.

North Douglas member John Houghton campaigned to have mephedrone, or plant food, outlawed last year.

He says the law change allows Tynwald to ban other drugs, as new ones appear, and if the authorities knew about MDAI, an order to ban it should have been put to the court:
