Minister confirms timescale for pier work

Work to stabilise Ramsey's Queen's Pier should be completed by Christmas.

Tynwald voted last month to spend ?1.75 million on making the structure safe and the main contractor for the Stabilisation and Protection Scheme, MPM Northwest Limited, began work on May 4.

Sections of the pier will be removed to prevent further deterioration and put into safe storage in Jurby.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne says he's delighted the department has been able to get the work under way promptly and, while there are still no plans for the pier's long term future, he has no doubt it was right to carry out the work (first part of audio file):

The work will involve the installation of a new walkway on the pier, but Mr Gawne says unfortunately it won't be possible to open it up to members of the public (second part of audio file):
