Chief constable responds to deemster's criticisms

by isleofman.com 20th May 2011

The chief constable has ordered a disciplinary probe, after a deemster said a police investigation included 'multiple serious failures'.

Deemster Moran dropped a case in which a police officer's daughter faced a wounding charge, describing those failures as 'almost a complete dereliction of duty'.

Members of Tynwald have been told the chief constable can either identify areas where lessons could be learned from what happened, or hold individual officers subject to scrutiny, and possible sanction.

In his replies to written questions from MHKs Peter Karran and David Cannan, Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw adds it would be inappropriate for him to comment further, for fear of prejudicing the investigation.

However, he adds that the Manx police carry out many hundreds of prosecutions every year, without attracting any negative comment.
