Castle Rushen re-enactment this weekend

by isleofman.com 19th May 2011

CASTLE Rushen will be brought to life by the UK's premier medieval re-enactment society this weekend.

A troupe from Conquest will invade the ancient grounds on Saturday and Sunday and will transport the castle, and its visitors, back to the 1200s.

Conquest will showcase life in a 13th century garrison with opportunities to witness knights engaging in live steel combat and the chance to handle their authentic Medieval arms and armour.

History experts will be on hand to discuss the skills needed to make it as a medieval knight and the medieval surgeon will also be on hand for those knights who are injured in battle. Be warned however, he'll be using authentic surgical tools to patch up those who need attention.

There will also be a chance to pick up some style advice - 13th century style. Costume making and design advice will be offered and beware of being enticed into a "harmless" game of medieval merrills as you might find yourself on the surgeons table.

Cooks will prepare an evening feast in the field kitchen and will happily share medieval recipes and talk about food and nutrition in the 13th century. With hungry soldiers to feed there won’t be any leftovers from the evening feast but there will be a hog-roast in the grounds of the castle for those who are feeling peckish.

The medieval re-enactment event will take place between 10am and 5pm on both days.

Tickets are priced at £10 per adult and £5 per child. There is free entry for children under two. They are available from the Manx Museum Heritage Shop, Castle Rushen and the Old Grammar School or online at www.manxheritageshop.com.
