THE Manx public is being given more time to makes its views known on the contentious issue of establishing a new body to enforce health and safety laws.
The Department of Infrastructure announced today that it is extending the consultation on establishing a separate body to enforce the Island’s laws on health and safety in the workplace to Monday 13th June 2011.
Although there has been a good response to the consultation, the Department says it wishes to ensure that all interested bodies have sufficient time to put forward their views.
A spokesman said, “Protecting the health and safety of people at work, and members of the public affected by work activities, became a key responsibility of the Department following the restructuring of Government in April 2010. Compliance with health and safety at work legislation is currently overseen by the Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate (HSWI) within the Department. “
The consultation sets out the proposals of the Department of Infrastructure concerning the framework, remit and powers of a new Health and Safety Authority.
It looks at developing feedback from parties affected by the legislation through the establishment of a ‘Health and Safety Consultative Committee’ made up of key Island stakeholders, and considers the process for appeals against Notices issued by Health and Safety Inspectors.
The Department welcomes responses on the proposed Health and Safety Authority from anyone with an interest in this matter. Please note that all responses should be received by 5.00pm on Monday 13 June 2011.
