Motorsports fan gets drive of his life

by isleofman.com 16th May 2011

AN avid motorsports fan got the drive of his life at last week's Manx Telecom Rally.

Patrick Herring from Douglas won a competition to ride as co-driver in a rally car driven by former Isle of Man rally champion Ian Corkill.

Sitting in the co-driver's seat of Ian's MKII Ford Escort Patrick experienced what it was like to race on closed roads on the 1.5mile run from Port Erin to Cregneash.

Patrick, who doesn’t drive, said: "It was a wonderful experience. Ian is obviously an extremely talented driver. I don't know how he makes the car do what it does. It was a bit scary going past buildings at racing speed and a little nerve-racking. My eyes nearly popped out of my head a couple of times!"
