THE new Laxey Working Men's Institute will be officially opened on Friday.

The building which has been restored over the last four years at a cost of more than £250,000 will be known from then on as The Institute.

The Laxey Working Men's Institute was first opened on May 4, 1876 and was designed as a place where the people of the village could meet to enjoy educational and recreational activities.

Although the official opening will take place on Friday, some community groups have already started to use the facility while finishing touches were completed.

So far the venue has attracted keep fit and yoga classes, dog clubs and mums and tots groups.

Bob Kinrade from Laxey will be tasked with officially opening the building at an unveiling ceremony at 3pm. This will be attended by people who have contributed to the project by giving money, materials or providing free labour.

Following this an evening of music featuring several local bands will be held from 7pm. 

Ken Callister, who is on the institute committee, said: "The event on the evening of the May 20, is a chance for everyone to see the building in full swing for the first time.

"Chris Corlett has pulled together a fantastic line-up including Grassroots, The Neighbours, John Barker and Friends, The Simon Campbell Band, Red Gap and Shenanigans Band. 

"Everyone is giving their time for free and having seen the building in action, we hope it will inspire groups and individuals to organise their own events."
