Mark Cavendish had to settle for 46th place on the eighth stage of the Giro D’Italia on Saturday.
He was in the chasing pack’s surge for third place and was one of a number of riders awarded the same time as third place Alessandro Petacchi.
Fellow Manxman Peter Kennaugh was in 140th position.
Oscar Gatto was the winner ahead of Alberto Contador.
Contador is in pole position going into Sunday's ninth stage which finishes on Mount Etna – Europe’s most active volcano which disrupted only a few days ago.
