THIS week Paddy's has chosen mussels and clams as the Fish of the Week.
All about mussels and clams…
Paddy's has coupled these together to get you cooking with something so reasonably priced, tasty and easy to cook you have plenty of scope to experiment.
Mussels and clams are bivalve molluscs which basically means two shells hinged - the whole of the inside of both is edible so there are no worries as to which bits can and can't be eaten.
Mussels attach themselves to rocks etc whilst clams bury in the sand, mainly in estuaries.
To cook simply…
Wash and clean the clams and mussels before cooking - with mussels it's good to remove any barnacles with a paring knife as these can make your sauce gritty.
Both are easily steamed in a few minutes over a high heat. They will open their shell once cooked and any that don't open should be discarded.
Until Sunday, May 15, mussels will be £1 per lb and live clams will be £4 per lb. There will be a sampling session at the Paddy’s counter in Shoprite, Victoria Road, Douglas on Saturday.
