Horse trams start 135th year of service

by isleofman.com 11th May 2011

THE Mayor of Douglas, Ritchie McNicholl, has officially launched the 135th year of the horse tram service.

Horse drawn trams will run along Douglas Promenade between 9am and 6pm until September 18.

The horse trams were started in 1876 by Thomas Lightfoot and are now owned and operated by Douglas Borough Council.

Journey time from Victoria Pier to the tram station at the Manx Electric Railway terminus by Strathallan Crescent is 20 minutes.

This year the season has been extended for a week to cover the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Season tickets which allow unlimited travel on the horse trams for the whole season are priced at £20 for adults, £15 for senior citizens and £10 for children under 16.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.douglas.gov.im or by telephoning Douglas Town Hall on 01624 696344.
