'Party funding stalls election spending plans'

Election candidates in political parties would have a distinct advantage funding their campaigns if proposals before the House of Keys were progressed.

That's the view of Rushen MHK Juan Watterson, after a bid to progress the Representation of the People amendment bill failed to receive sufficient support in the Keys yesterday (Tuesday), amid concerns it was being rushed through before September's general election.

The plans include limiting election spending and stricter controls on political donations.

Mr Watterson believes more time is needed so the ideas can be thought through more carefully:
