Critically acclaimed production of Hamlet coming to Gaiety Theatre

by isleofman.com 9th May 2011

THE Northern Broadsides theatre company will return to the Gaiety Theatre next week with a highly acclaimed new production of Hamlet.

The company will perform the Shakespeare classic from Thursday, May 19 to Saturday, May 21.

Celebrated for their revelatory approach to Shakespeare and featuring a multi-talented company of charismatic actors, Northern Broadsides has won a loyal following worldwide.

Directed by Conrad Nelson the haunting production employs theatrical sleight of hand to conjure ghosts of the dead and demons of the mind -bringing to the stage an inventive and insightful take on the tortured Danish prince.

Hamlet's cast features Nicholas Shaw in the role of Hamlet ('Tis Pity She's a Whore and Anthology, Liverpool Everyman Theatre), Becky Hindley as Gertrude (best known as the stalker Charlotte Hoyle in Coronation Street), Natalie Dew as Ophelia (Arabian Nights, Royal Shakespeare Company) and Finetime Fontayne as Claudius (Othello, Northern Broadsides).

The production, set in the post war era, also features brothers David Colvin as Rosencrantz (Black Watch, National Theatre of Scotland) and Richard Colvin (Assassins, Sheffield Theatres) as Guildenstern, appearing together on stage for the first time.

The company last visited the Isle of Man with Comedy of Errors and Sweet William in 2005. This visit is being supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council.

Quintin Gill MHK, the Arts Council chairman, said: "This is a production for everyone. The Arts Council's support in bringing Northern Broadsides to the Isle of Man provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to see a more contemporary production.

"Don't miss the chance to catch it – just look at the show's reviews for confirmation how brilliant this production is."

The Times have described the performance as "a fine, vivid Hamlet jazzed up for new era of rage and revenge".

Hamlet will be performed nightly at 7.30pm. There will be a matinee performance at 2pm on Saturday, May 21.

Tickets cost £16 and are available from the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal, online at www.villagaiety.com or by telephoning the ticket hotline on 01624 600555.
