The loss of five jobs at the Department of Leisure will ultimately mean greater security for the employees who remain.
So says Leisure Minister David Cretney, after confirmation five railway workers have been made redundant, with immediate effect.
Two blacksmiths, two painter/signwriters and a joiner have lost their jobs as the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure tries to find savings of ?800,000.
However, Unite chief Steve Salter believes the job losses could have been avoided, as the specific skills of the men involved are still needed (play audio file):
Mr Cretney says the department regrets making anyone redundant and tried to save four of the five posts by changing working agreements.
However, its proposals were not accepted by workforce representatives.
He says the staff affected will have help seeking new employment.
