Hope to honour lifeboat crew

by isleofman.com 3rd May 2011

Two divers say they hope to display the bell of a trawler which sank off the Island’s coast 70 years ago at Ramsey lifeboat station.

Michelle Stewardson and Andy Walton recovered the bell from the wreck of the Merisia, which foundered in bad weather near Bulgham Bay in January 1940.

Both are crew members on Ramsey lifeboat and say they’d like to put the bell on show there because the Merisia’s crew had been praised for their bravery in rescuing another crew some time previously.

Michelle says there are still some obstacles to overcome before the bell can be put on display.
