Brass band season starts on Tuesday

by isleofman.com 1st May 2011

THE Villa Marina Arcade and Gardens in Douglas will play host to the new brass band season which starts this week.

The first concert will be by Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band who will play in the arcade on Tuesday (May 3) at 8pm.

The brass band season is a popular annual feature of the Isle of Man Arts Council's programme of events, providing an opportunity for the Island's brass bands to play regularly throughout the summer.

Concerts take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8pm in the Villa Marina Arcade and on Sunday afternoons at 3pm in the Villa Marina Gardens if the weather is fine.

In the event of bad weather Sunday concerts will move to the Villa Marina Arcade.

This year the season runs until the middle of August and the concerts are free, though the performing band may take a collection.

Arts Council Chairman Quintin Gill MHK said: "The Arts Council is very proud of the brass band season which goes from strength to strength.

"Bands often play to full audiences and provide popular, well loved music free of charge and in a beautiful setting. Many of our brass bands are award winners and have many young members, for whom it is a vital training ground.

"The Arts Council is delighted to support this showcase for our talented brass musicians."
