End of an era in Michael

by isleofman.com 26th April 2011

Michael MHK David Cannan is to retire from Manx politics.

The long-serving politician will not seek re-election in September’s General Election.

Mr Cannan, a former Speaker of the House and former Treasury Minister, has represented Michael since October 1982 – nearly 29 years – and is the second longest serving MHK in the House.

He says he’s made the decision after careful consideration and, approaching his 75th birthday in August, if he stood again his term of office would end when he was 80 years-old.

Mr Cannan says it’s time to move on and allow a younger person with new thinking and fresh ideas to represent the community and make a positive contribution to the Island’s economic and social well-being in the difficult time ahead.

He says he’s been privileged to represent Michael and has always endeavoured to serve the community and the Island to the best of his ability.

You'll be able to hear an interview with Mr Cannan on Mandate on Wednesday (April 27) morning.
