TT riders involved in greatest races receive stamp issue

by isleofman.com 21st April 2011

TT riders who feature on a new set of stamps to mark the Centenary of the Mountain Course received framed copies of the issue at the TT launch earlier this week.

The stamps depict 10 of the most epic TT Races ever.

Competitors Ian Hutchinson, John McGuinness, Cameron Donald, Ryan Farquhar, Klaus Klaffenbock, Dan Sayle and John Holden featured in some of them and they each received the framed set of the stamps at the launch held at the Sound from Dot Tilbury, general manager of the Philatelic Bureau.

Dot said: "Picking ten 10 races out of the hundred of thrilling encounters was no easy task and racers John McGuinness, Ian Hutchinson, Michael Dunlop, Dave Molyneux, Charlie Williams, Steve Parrish, historian Bill Snelling (of FoTToFinders) and journalists John Watterson (Isle of Man Newspapers) and Gary Pinchin (MCN) spent hours deliberating to arrive at, what they believe, are some of the most exciting races in TT history."

She added: "We were delighted to have the opportunity to present some of the riders who feature on our stamp issue with framed copies of the stamps.

"2011 is a major milestone for the TT with the historic Mountain Course celebrating its centenary and we felt that stamps to celebrate would be a fitting tribute."

A public vote to choose the greatest TT race ever on the iconic Mountain Course saw the 1992 Senior TT, which quickly unfolded into a thrilling battle between Steve Hislop and Carl Fogarty, top the polls.

The race saw both riders on unfamiliar bikes at the TT - Foggy on a Loctite Yamaha OW01 and Hizzy on an Abus-backed Norton rotary.

But it didn't stop them delivering one of the truly memorable showdowns in the TT history with both riders posting lap records during the race.

First Hislop broke his own lap record, then Fogarty raised it to 123.61mph but Hislop took the race by 4.4s and set a new race record of 121.38mph in Norton's first TT win since 1973 and their first Senior victory since 1961.

A miniature sheet depicting this race has been produced and this along with the set of stamps, first day cover and presentation pack is now available to buy online at www.iomstamps.com

The top 10 greatest races of all time as chosen by the group of TT competitors, historians and journalists are:

1. 1935 Senior TT - Woods v Guthrie
