'Attention seeking' act went wrong

by isleofman.com 20th April 2011

A misadventure verdict has been recorded at an inquest on a 26-year-old man who drowned in Ramsey harbour.

Evidence showed Kenneth Richards, of Mooragh promenade, jumped off the quayside in the early hours of November 25 last year, after a night out drinking.

His body was found four hours later and a post mortem examination confirmed he died from salt water drowning while intoxicated.

The inquest heard Mr Richards left the RAOB club on the quay sometime after 2am.

He then made his way to the harbour's edge where he called 999 and said he planned to jump off the pier.

When police responded they found his keys, wallet and mobile phone on the quayside.

Coroner of inquests Alastair Montgomerie said the fact Mr Richards called the police and left his belongings behind meant suicide was unlikely.

He said Mr Richards had a history of depression and self-harm but had never seriously attempted to take his own life.

Mr Montgomerie called his death 'an attention seeking act that went tragically wrong'.
