The FTSE 100 closed lower following the release of US economic data. Initial jobless
claims disappointed, climbing by 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 412,000, reaching its
highest point in two months.
U.K. consumers became more optimistic about the economic outlook in the weeks ahead of
the government's March 23 budget, leading to a rise in consumer confidence from its record
low in February, according to a monthly survey commissioned by the Nationwide Building
Society. Retailers such as Primark owner Associated British Foods and Marks & Spencer rose
on the figures.
Swiss-based commodity house Glencore is to raise between $9bn (£5.5bn) and $11bn as it
lists on the London and Hong Kong stock exchanges. The company, which will join the FTSE
100, will issue between 15% and 20% of its capital.
Reckitt Benckiser took a sharp dive after the FTSE 100-listed maker of household products
announced the retirement of its hugely influential chief executive Bart Becht. Reckitt Benckiser
closed down £2.36 at £31.30.
