A GROUP of twelve 6th form students from St Ninian’s High School has started raising funds for a personal development expedition to Borneo later this summer.
The month-long trip will include an expedition into the Borneo rainforests and most of their time will be spent in remote locations. The building of a conservation centre for local wildlife is part of the programme.
Borneo is rich in wildlife and is particularly well known for its thriving population of orang utan.
The group will also spend time in the country’s cities, including the northern states of Sabah and Sarawak. A climb up the highest mountain in south east Asia - Kinabulu - is also in the schedule.
Specialist travel group Wilderness Expertise is helping to co-ordinate the trip, having a wide experience in send young people to remote parts of the world on personal development expeditions. One teacher and a qualified leader will support the group, but the students will take responsibility for budgeting for food, travel and accommodation and making day-to-day decisions for the well being of the whole group.
One of the students - 17 year old Hannah Riordan - is organising fund raising for the trip and is approaching local individuals and companies for support. “In the past few months we, as a group, have worked together in a number of different activities such as bag packing, cake sales and organising a football tournament. We are grateful for any support anyone can provide.”
Additional information about the trek is available from the group’s link teacher Carole Laporte on 648800. Cheques in support should be made payable to St Ninian’s High School.
