The new squirrel monkey house at the Curraghs Wildlife Park in Ballaugh has been officially opened.
Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure David Cretney did the honours at the ?12,000 chalet-style structure in the 'Flooded Forest of the Amazon' area, in time for the start of the summer season.
The Wildlife Park has had considerable success with breeding squirrel monkeys since they were introduced there in the 1990s, and the European Stud Book has asked it to provide groups of females to other collections on the continent.

The Friends of the Wildlife Park contributed 50 per cent of the cost of the new monkey house.
Chairman Roy Howarth says the group raises funds for such projects throughout the year, and is always on the lookout for volunteers to get involved with the work around the park (second part of audio file):
