Bank staff given opportunity to complete Professional Certificate in Banking

by isleofman.com 6th April 2011

BANKING operations staff at Barclays Wealth have been given the opportunity to complete a Professional Certificate in Banking from the Chartered Institute of Bankers.

The certificate is an industry benchmark qualification for those starting out in, or aspiring to, a management career in financial services – particularly in retail and commercial banking.

Once achieved it gives candidates the opportunity to study further for a diploma or to go on to reach chartered bankers status.

Eight members of staff have passed the qualification since September and 100 more are on course to complete it by the end of April.

Simon Scott, managing director of Barclays Wealth, said: "Barclays Wealth is dedicated to the professional development of all our staff in all areas of the business.

"Our banking operations team is essential to delivering fantastic service so it is vital that they are trained to the highest standard both on internal systems and externally via professional qualifications.

"The Professional Certificate in Banking will help develop industry knowledge and enable our staff to better understand the strategic and operational decisions made within the business.

"With a significant portion of the global operations of Barclays Wealth based here on the Island, it is vital that we continue to develop our staff to their full potential.

"It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic people commit to study towards professional qualifications which will benefit not just Barclays Wealth but the Island as a whole.’

Michelle Kenna, an analyst in branch banking, has signed up to take the qualification this year. She said: "I have been with Barclays Wealth for almost four years and have a fairly good knowledge of the industry. By taking this qualification I will strengthen my knowledge and improve my understanding even further which means I can contribute more to our customers and to the company."

The Department of Economic Development will also be helping through its support of vocational training in the Isle of Man.

Economic Development Minister Allan Bell MHK said: "I welcome the news that Barclays Wealth is providing this opportunity for their staff. My department is committed to helping local firms develop the skills of their employees and I am pleased that this initiative is being progressed within the key banking sector."
