Guided walk of Silverdale Glen with natural history curator

by isleofman.com 6th April 2011

WILDLIFE enthusiasts have a chance to take a guided walk of Silverdale Glen with a curator of natural history next week.

Kate Hawkins from Manx National Heritage will be leading a guided tour through the glen and along the Silverburn River on Friday, April 15.

She said: "I will demonstrate the productivity of deciduous woodland by sweeping the lower vegetation with a net, searching crevices in bark and under stones and using a garden sieve to flush bugs and beasties from leaf litter.

"There might also be butterflies about. There should be birds singing, even towards the middle of the day, and we might spot the odd summer visitor like Willow Warbler, Blackcap or Chiffchaff."

Tickets for the event cost £8 and are available from the Manx Museum Heritage Shop. Places are limited and pre-booking is essential.

Walkers should meet at The Abbey Restaurant in Ballasalla at 10am for tea or coffee which is included in the ticket price. The walk should finish at 12pm.
