'Make seamen's rights an election issue'

by isleofman.com 6th April 2011

Unions are launching an attack on MHKs, ahead of the House of Keys general election, over seamen's pay and conditions.

Urged on by general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union Bob Crow, Steam Packet members are being urged to send pre-printed postcards to Chief Minister Tony Brown, stressing concerns about employment and pensions.

At a public meeting in Douglas last night (Tuesday), Mr Crow said it should be made an election issue (first part of audio file):

At the same meeting, president of the Isle of Man Trades Union Council Angela Moffatt said direct action was needed over the current dispute involving postal workers (second part of audio file):

Members of the Communication Workers Union employed by the Isle of Man Post Office are due to stage a 24-hour strike next Tuesday (April 12) over pay.

Management says its hands are tied by the public sector pay freeze.
