The funeral is being held this afternoon (Monday) of a Manxman who has been described as making an immeasurable contribution to Island life.

Alan Pickard spent a lifetime encouraging countless young people to experience the joy of music.

He was head of the Island's music service for 17 years, and conducted the Manx Sinfonia, the Manx Youth Orchestra, and the Manx Girls' Choir.

He also formed the Isle of Man Teachers' Choir and the Manx Youth Orchestra, and organised the International Festival of Music and Dance.

Mr Pickard died at Noble's Hospital nine days ago, aged 68.

Long-time colleague Bernard Osborne says he influenced people of all ages (play audio file):

The funeral service will be held at Malew Parish Church at 2pm today.
