Minister happy with levels of road tax

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne has told the House of Keys he believes road tax is set at about the correct level.

He was responding to a question from Michael member David Cannan on his department's policy of taxing older cars brought to the Island by new residents as if they were new vehicles, in relation to emissions of carbon dioxide.

Mr Cannan also asked if he thought the policy was unfair and inequitable, when identical Manx-registered cars were taxed at a lower rate.

Mr Gawne told the House his aim was to encourage lower polluting vehicles and, while vehicle duty was reviewed annually, responses to the current policy suggested his department had got it about right:
