Fire service urging people to change batteries in their smoke alarms

by isleofman.com 26th March 2011

FIREFIGHTERS are using the clocks going forward tomorrow (Sunday) as an opportunity to remind people to regularly change the batteries in their smoke alarms.

Crews attending incidents in homes around the Island are finding that a number have smoke alarms which have failed to operate.

Station Officer Carl Kinvig said: "Some of the properties we attend have smoke detectors which have either a five or 10 year battery life.

"However a lot of people have smoke detectors which require the battery changing every 12 months.

"Therefore it is a good idea to tie the changing of your smoke alarm battery in with a specific event that occurs every 12 months, the clocks going forward being a good example."

Alarms should be tested each week regardless of what kind of battery they have.
