'No need for Sunday racing bill'

by isleofman.com 25th March 2011

Bishop Robert says there won't be any problems with racing on Sundays during his watch.

He also beleives there wouldn't be any need for legislation to allow road closures on the sabbath if people used their common sense.

The Road Races Amendment Bill was drawn up to allow for racing during the Commonwealth Youth Games, but it was criticised by some people who were concerned about the possible impact on church services.

It was recently withdrawn, so Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne could take legal advice over aspects of the legislation.

Bishop Robert had put forward an amendment calling for no closures before 1pm or after 6pm so that Sunday worship wouldn't be affected.

But he's hopeful the bill has been withdrawn for good because he can't see any need for it:
