Positive Action Group aims to identify election issues

by isleofman.com 26th March 2011

A POLITICAL lobby group will use its next public meeting to try to identify issues that are of concern to the electorate.

It will take place on Monday (March 28) at 7.30pm at the Manx Legion Club, Market Hill, Douglas and everyone is invited to attend the free event.

The Positive Action Group is keen to get feedback from the public and raise awareness of the whole election process.

Five years ago the group flagged up freedom of information as a vital issue but said an act has not been introduced, despite promises it would be.

A Positive Action Group spokesman said: "We must learn from the experience in 2006 that with the Isle of Man political system it is very difficult to hold politicians to account for promises they make before elected.

"If we can identify a limited number of topics that people are worried about right now it is more likely that successful candidates will direct their energies accordingly.

"We don't just want to hear from our supporters. It's important to learn the views of a broad cross section of people.

"Voters only have the opportunity every five years to influence the direction of Island politics and we need to grasp it.

“This time we want politicians to fulfill all their promises and carry out the will of the electorate."

The general election takes place on Thursday, September 29.
