NOMINATIONS are wanted for the 2011 Tomorrow's Farmer Awards.
There are two categories - the Tomorrow's Farmers Award and the Judges Special Award for a Young Farmer.
In both cases the award seeks to recognise and reward farmers who are committed to the future of the agricultural industry in the Island.
Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister John Shimmin MHK said: "These awards not only aim to showcase the best farmers on the Island but provide an opportunity to share stories of best practice, to inspire others and influence the public about the role that farmers play in today's society.
"The award is a chance to celebrate all that is good about farming and give individuals the chance to shine."
The award is being sponsored by Shoprite.
The supermarket firm's chief executive Andrew Thomas said: "As a major supporter of the Island's agricultural industry, we are delighted to continue our support for Manx farmers and producers by sponsoring the awards again this year.
"Driving Gross National Income is really important for our economy, particularly in the current economic climate, and locally produced items sold by Shoprite deliver maximum financial benefit for the Island.
"We intend to increase our range of Manx produced products and we see these awards as a way of encouraging innovation and highlighting excellence, ensuring our customers continue to enjoy quality local produce.
"We will continue to work closely with our large extended 'family' of local producers and distribution partners on the Island, to grow their businesses and the Island's economy."
Last year's winners were Dougie and Belinda Coole at Ballamodha Mooar and Trevor Quirk at Corvalley Farm, Kirk Michael.
These farmers cannot be nominated for an award this year.
Shortlisted entries will be selected and entrants will then be visited by the judges in July.
The winners will be revealed at the award ceremony which will take place at the Royal Manx Agricultural Show on Friday, August 12.
Nominations should be made before April 7, giving a brief reason for the chosen nomination, and they should be sent to Audrey Fowler, marketing officer, DEFA, Thie Slieau Whallian, Foxdale, Isle of Man IM4 3As or email: audrey.fowler@gov.im
Judges will be looking for the farmers who best demonstrate their forward thinking and will assess entries against the following factors: farming efficiently and profitably; being market focused; local food promotion; diversification and conservation.
