Cabbies wanted double the agreed fare increase

Have taxi fares gone up enough?

Yesterday (Monday) it was announced they would be increasing by five per cent from April 1, due to the rising cost of fuel.

However figures as high as 15 per cent had been discussed.

Secretary of the Road Transport Licensing Committee Brian Leece says taxi operators are invited once a year to participate in a fare review, and a broad range of proposals are put forward.

He admits it's always a difficult decision (first part of audio file):
