Island represented at Hailwood commemoration

A Douglas man is taking part in events this weekend to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of motorcycle racing legend Mike Hailwood.

Chris Smith will be among hundreds of bikers involved in an annual memorial run, based near the former home of the TT star, in Birmingham.

After a career spanning 20 years, which included nine world championships, 76 grand prix wins and 14 TT victories, Hailwood was killed in March 1981, in a road accident which also claimed the life of his daughter, Michelle.

Chris says his famous winning TT return in 1978, after eleven years out of the races, remains the stuff of legend:
