Inspection failed to pick up defects

Extensive repairs and maintenance work have been carried out on decking piers used by Steam Packet staff, after a seasonal worker was injured when one of them gave way as he walked across it.

In court yesterday (Thursday), the Department of Infrastructure was fined a total of ?16,000 after pleading guilty to two breaches of health and safety regulations.

Director of harbours Captain Mike Brew says the defects weren't noticed during a routine safety inspection several months before the incident:
