Government fined after decking collapses

by isleofman.com 18th March 2011

A department of the Manx government has been fined ?16,000 for health and safety breaches, reported by one of its own staff.

The Department of Infrastructure pleaded guilty to two charges, brought under the Health and Safety Act, following an incident in which a Steam Packet worker suffered serious leg injuries.

John Adams of Douglas, a seasonal worker with the Steam Packet, was injured last August when a section of steel decking he was standing on gave way, and is now considering lodging a civil claim.

The department had been charged with installing and maintaining the decking on the quay in Douglas, adjacent to one of the fast craft moorings.

It admitted not maintaining a safe place of work for its own employees and failing to discharge its duty for an employee of the Steam Packet.

The department received an ?8,000 fine for each of the two offnces, plus costs of ?125.
