A GLOBAL TT motorcycle race series starting in 2014 and featuring the world's top road racers is being looked into.
The idea is in the very early stages but a feasibility review on whether such a plan would work is going to be conducted by the Department of Economic Development, the commercial rights holders of the TT.
The department said a consultation exercise is to begin soon.
The TT, which this year is celebrating 100 years of the 37.73 mile Mountain Course, is world famous.
It attracts riders and spectators from across the globe and in the past few years in particular there has been a surge in high profile newcomers, in addition to the very top riders and teams in the road racing world taking part.
It also now attracts more mainstream media attention - one of its biggest stars, Guy Martin, now has his own show on BBC One where he renovates a boat with inventions from the industrial revolution, while a 3D film has been made about the event.
The intention of a race series would be to increase the return on investment for the government in the TT races brand through sponsorship, television, licensing and hospitality, generate revenue earning opportunities for the competitors and teams who take part and to provide economic and commercial benefits for the destinations and other commercial partners who host rounds.
If the proposal is viable the department will look to organise a programme of events for the 2014 racing season.
The TT was part of the world championship (now known as MotoGP) up until 1976.
Economic Development Minister Allan Bell MHK said: "We are in the early stages of a consultation process and would welcome approaches from potential partners who are interested in the venture.
"The TT Races, as one of the world's oldest and most prestigious sporting events, has incredible heritage and attracts interest worldwide from fans.
"We want to develop and grow this global audience for the benefit both of the event and the Isle of Man."
