TAXI drivers have been protesting outside Tynwald this morning (Tuesday) over plans to allow cabs to operate anywhere in the Island.
Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK will be hoping for his colleagues support for the move at today's sitting.
At present taxis are restricted to one of four districts.
The move to all-Island taxis is part of the department's ongoing programme to modernise transport provision and was the most favoured option in a public consultation completed last November.
However taxi drivers believe the move will have serious implications, particularly for those based in Douglas.
Douglas North MHK Bill Henderson joined taxi drivers at the protest this morning.
A number held up signs.
One of the signs said "facts about 'all Island' taxi licensing. These facts are as, if not more, accurate than the facts that the minister will put before Tynwald.
"Increase pollution, cause bankruptcy, create longer dole queues, make people homeless, reduce service to remote areas, bring legal action against the government."
However Mr Gawne said: "Our priority must be in the best interests of the public, the customer and the environment, however I remain committed to working the taxi industry to ensure that the best interests of all parties are served."
He added he realised the move was a significant change to the industry and the department will review the effects of it, should Tynwald approve the motion, in 12 months.
