Man was dishonest when filling in form

by isleofman.com 14th March 2011

A Polish man who failed to tell the authorities he had previous criminal convictions when he applied for a work permit has been jailed.

Ksawery Gerrard Kalwasinski, of Woodville Road in Douglas, appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Alastair Montgomerie.

He admitted obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception following declarations on his work permit applications between 2006 and 2009.

The court heard he had previous convictions in Poland and the Isle of Man.

The court heard Kalwasinski had worked at Strand Cleaners and Isle of Man Seafood Products.

His advocate Roger Caine said his client had a limited grasp of English when he filled in the form, but accepted he had previous convictions.

Mr Montgomerie imposed a total sentence of 75 days in jail.

He said the message had to go out that people coming to the Island must be open and honest with the authorities.
